Jessica Drew became ill with uranium poisoning during her childhood, and her father attempted to cure her with an untested serum containing the immunological properties of several arachnid species' bloods. Jessica was sealed in a genetic accelerator to speed the process, but it did not work very well and by the time she woke up, she had no memory and her parents had disappeared.

Gaining superhuman abilities, flight and Venom Blasts, Jessica took on the name of Spider-Woman and fought crime in San Francisco and several other cities.

Spider-Woman has no relation to Spider-Man and was unaware he existed when she took the name.
